    Description

CHOICE EARLY ANTIQUE HMONG / MAIO PECTORAL NECKLACE, 18TH. CENT.
A rare and early pectoral silver necklace, Hmong Culture, southeastern Asian, ca. 18th. century.
The necklace with engraved bibs or collar with scrolled foliates and geometric borders, semi-circular (coin?) stamps at one side. The necklace with thick square finials.
Extremely beautiful silver work. Nice old patina.
    Size: ca. 13,5 cm. long by 13 cm. wide. (c. 5 x 5 inches).
The Hmong people are esteemed for their skill in making silver jewelry and throughout history have displayed their ornate and stunning jewelry in celebration of the New Year. In the 19th century, the tribal people melted French silver coins to obtain the metals needed to continue making their jewelry. As such early works of jewelry by the Hmong people tend to have higher silver content than later pieces.
